Learn More About: Pediatric Eye Care

At what age should a child have their first comprehensive eye exam (not screening) by an Optometrist? Believe it or not, the American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive exam before the child’s first birthday. Children are not born with good vision, but develop it during their first 6 years of life. The smallest abnormality during the infant and toddler stages can have drastic implications in the child’s ability to develop normal vision and use it in school. Because 1 in 10 children are at risk for an undiagnosed vision problem, we believe that every child should receive regular dilated eye exams, not just those who complain about their vision.

Dr. Montgomery is proud to participate in InfantSEE, a program designed by the AOA whereby any infant between the ages of 6-12 months can receive a comprehensive dilated exam at no charge. The exam is as simple as making an appointment; there are no strings attached or hoops to jump through. Call for an appointment today!

Beyond infant exams, a child with good visual health should be seen at 3 years of age, before entering school at age 5, and then every 1 to 2 years thereafter, depending on the doctor’s recommendation. We have a specially designed pediatric exam room to make your child feel at ease and a large selection of children’s glasses to choose from. Protect your child’s vision and future by making sure the receive regular dilated eye exams!
